ESTÁTUA DO LIDADOR
The Estátua do Lidador was conceived in stone by the Portuguese sculptor Amadeu Lima de Carvalho, with the objective of honoring Gonçalo Mendes da Maia, better known as "O Lidador".
Gonçalo Mendes da Maia was born in 1079. During his youth, he was always a rich gentleman.
This glorious soldier fought alongside D.Afonso Henriques for the Independence and the enlargement of the Portuguese territory.He was also the hero of the foundation of our nationality, and D. Afonso Henriques(the first King of Portugal) named him his Adeantado.
His famous title "O Lidador" is due to the many and diverse victories achieved in battles against the Moors.
He died when he was 90 years old.
